You will get the best exchange rate by using your ATM card in a machine there and taking out the local currency. Whatever you have left over, make sure you exchange that before you leave Slovenia. Countries that are not full members of the EU yet, they are a real pain in the neck to exchange the currency when you are back in the Euro zone, and, when you can, you get hit with stiff penalties.

I think you should have euro but with local currency at the level to use within duration of your stay.

because if you change all your money in local then on return you will have to suffer "exchange cuts"

on the otherhand with all euro.... may be someone deny to accept or give you the "snow rates"

Neither one of the two. I would strongly suggest to take Travel Checks issued by your bank. They are safe... you can pay everything with them and if you loose them or they get stolen you just call the 800 number and your money would not be lost!!

Why not take GBP and just convert it over there? You could probably use your cash card but that words out expensive.

Just take Slovak Crowns (Koruna). You can even just withdraw them from an ATM when you get there.
