The French Alps, Swiss Alps, Austrian Alps, Bavarian Alps (Germany), Italian Alps, or the Julian Alps (in Slovenia).

If you've never been to the Alps, stop agonizing and just go to any part, they're all great. To start with the last: the Julian Alps (in Slovenia) are very nice, very free of tourists, and of great interest to people interested in WWI, which is why my husband and I visited them this summer. Don't expect resorts. Do expect awesome views, great river rafting or kayaking, and interesting folk art. The food we got was great. English is not one of the major languages, but German and Italian are widely spoken.
Being Austrian, I love the Austrian Alps, of course. Go to this web site to see:
I have been to the French, Swiss and Bavarian alps. They also have great views and things to do. Personally, I find the people less friendly. The Italian Alps are kind of the "edge" of the Alps, and it is great to go there if you also want to see the Italian coast.
Hope I helped!

French alps - very high mountains
Swiss alps - classic scenery and villages
Bavarian/Austrian - a special character of their own. I've been there. Try starting in Munich and taking the train to the Salzburg area.
Italian - romantic lake district
Julian alps - don't know anything about them
