Engebret Café

Bankplassen 1, Christiania Theatre, Oslo, Norway 0151 · 22-33-66-94

CENTRAL OSLO. This delightful restaurant was established in 1857 and has retained its 19th century interior. It is located beside the old Christiania Theatre and just north of Akershus Castle and was once a popular destination for writers and artists. The elaborate dinner menu features traditional Norwegian seafood and game dishes. Begin with the terrine of game with blackberry port-wine sauce or the fish soup. Entrées include Engebret's big fish pot, red wild boar with whortleberry sauce, Norwegian reindeer, and salmon Christiania. The cloudberry parfait is a superb dessert.

Maud's

Brynjulf Bulls plass 1, Oslo, Norway 0250 · 22-83-72-28

AKER BRYGGE. This charming Norwegian restaurant is situated in a train station located between the Town Hall and the waterfront. The excellent Norwegian menu features "tre lakser," which is salmon that is smoked, marinated in aquavit, and pickled, and "sjkøreps," a herb-grilled Norway lobster salad. Delightful open-air seating is available and overlooks the harbor at Aker Brygge.

Restaurant Julius Fritzner

Karl Johans gate 31, Oslo, Norway 0158 · 22-42-93-90

CENTRAL OSLO. This impressive restaurant is located in the prestigious Grand Hotel. The seasonal gourmet menu features Norwegian and International cuisine that may include pan-fried turbot, roast saddle of lamb with rosemary, poached halibut with vermouth sauce, and filet of veal with crispy fried sweetbreads. The delicious desserts are often presented with a dramatic flair and include a terrine of chocolate with compote of peaches, and sorbet flavored with basil and cinnamon. The wine list is one of the best in Norway. Reservations are required.

Hotel Continental

$$$

Oslo

Spanning an entire city block in the heart of downtown Oslo, the family-owned Hotel Continental overlooks Palace Park and is located across the street from the National Theatre. The reception area and banquet spaces feature a meticulously maintained Victorian decor with brocade walls and oil paintings; guest rooms are furnished with antiques. Art aficionados will appreciate the hotel's extensive collection of prints by Edvard Munch, which are on display in the relaxed lobby bar, Dagligstuen.

Hotel Bristol

$$

Oslo

This lively spot is hipper and cheaper than the Hotel Continental and the Grand Hotel, if a little less luxurious. Some rooms feature marble tubs, but others have only showers, and late-night noise from the street can aggravate visitors—light sleepers should request the quiet rooms in the back. However, no one is likely to complain about the attentive staff or the lavish, 1920s-era reception area. Boasting a Moorish Art Deco theme and a piano player behind a baby grand, the latter feels more like the set of Casablanca than a Scandinavian inn.

Cochs Pensjonat

$

Oslo

Frugal students and other thrifty travelers are drawn to this hotel, where no-frills (and slightly shabby) rooms start at around $60—for those who can live without an in-room TV or telephone and don't mind sharing the bathroom down the hall with strangers. The newer rooms, outfitted in birch furniture and boasting private baths and kitchenettes, are only slightly pricier. No restaurant on the premises, but guests receive discount certificates to many neighborhood eateries.

At the new food market in Grünerløkka you can taste and buy a lot of regional and international food. It's called "Mathallen" in Norwegian.
